Why Your Annual Goals Don’t Matter

Yesterday, I finally admitted to something I’d been secretly feeling ashamed about all year: our team didn’t set goals for 2024. 😬

Traditionally, we kicked off our team business planning in January. This often resulted in high-reaching goals accompanied by a half-baked strategy. Why? Because before we could finalize our plans, the demands of business would start to pile up.

In 2023, we shifted gears and began our business planning in October. The results were phenomenal. We wrapped up the year with a comprehensive business plan, complete with individual goals, action items, and timelines for each team member. Our business absolutely soared!

However, as often happens in real estate, when a strategy works, the busyness it generates can cause us to neglect it, restarting the cycle. I call this the Real Estate Roller Coaster—a perpetual motion between feast or famine, stress, and demotivation.

Vision Over Goals

But you know what’s even more crucial than setting goals? Having a VISION. Our team has managed to have a stellar year, boasting over $200 million worth of real estate—active, pending, sold, or in our pipeline—even though we didn’t formally set goals for 2024.

Dan Martell teaches a framework known as the 10X Vision Amplifier. The idea is simple: if you can vividly visualize your 10X self and believe in its possibility—consistently holding onto that belief—you will both consciously and subconsciously make decisions propelling you towards that vision, making goal achievement inevitable.

I take this one step further: the 10X vision starts with determining how you want to feel. Let’s be honest, if your aim is to earn $1,000,000, it’s not really about the dollars—it’s about feeling financially secure, enjoying the freedom to live the lifestyle you desire, and having the ability to give generously to causes that matter to you.

Crafting Your 2025 Business Plan

Here’s how our team is approaching our 2025 business planning, an approach I’ll be sharing live with students in The Elevated Agent Collective this November:

  1. Assess Your Current Feelings: Reflect on how you currently feel about your life and business, and how you want to feel as the 10X version of you.
  2. Create a Vision: Design a business vision aligned with those feelings (confident, calm, safe, powerful, free, etc.).
  3. Reverse Engineer Steps: Break down the steps to achieve this vision, complete with action items and timed schedules.
  4. Set Sales Goals and Review: Establish your sales goals and schedule regular review sessions.

Trust me, setting arbitrary goals without a robust plan to achieve them is futile. It will only drain your energy and make you feel bad about your progress (I’ve been there many times!).

Imagine having a fully-developed business plan for 2025 before Thanksgiving. You’d spend December feeling calm and confident, focusing on family and celebrations, knowing you’re ready to hit the ground running come January 1st (or maybe the 2nd).
